2013: Brahms and Early Music/The Music of the Spheres: Music and Mathematics in the Renaissance

2013 Season Brochure

Convivium began our 2013 season by moving from St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlestown to a new rehearsal home at United Parish, Brookline.  We performed in Andover, Cambridge, Brookline, Boston, Foxboro, and Worcester, and reprised the January Brahms and Early Music program at our Boston Early Music Festival Fringe concert in June.  In addition, the men of Convivium were delighted to assist the Boston Camerata in a performance of Guillaume de Machaut’s glorious Messe de Notre Dame in March.  We also participated in the 8th Annual Boston Walk for Music on Sunday, April 28, 2013, raising over $750 towards our Lassus CD project.

Winter 2013: Brahms and Early Music

Public domain photograph of Johannes Brahms

The music library of Johannes Brahms reflected the composer’s almost unprecedented respect for artists of the past.  One is not surprised to find Schubert, Mozart, Haydn and Bach among his collection, but there was also a healthy collection of Schütz, Isaac, and other composers that, for the time, were relatively unknown.  Brahms was also responsible for bringing many of these composers to the Viennese public, helping to usher in more generally the concept of the “canon” in Western musical life.  Convivium presents a sample of the works Brahms held so dear and that he chose to share with his adopted Vienna.

“…radiant and full sound…the group, at all times, projected complete interpretive assurance and a palpable sense of dedication to this music…”:

Spring 2013: Music of the Spheres: Music and Mathematics in the Renaissance

An antique planisphere with inscriptions

The fifteenth century saw the beginning of the breakdown of the intellectual barrier that separated music as noble science and music as a practical, human activity.  Even so, the logic of mathematics and geometry continued to play a significant role in the compositional process of Renaissance composers, nowhere more ingeniously demonstrated than in the works of Johannes Ockeghem.  We include works of Obrecht, Josquin, Lassus, Zarlino and others.
